Braces can be metal or clear (ceramic) and may be used to correct just about any orthodontic problem (crowding, crooked teeth and bad bites).
Certain developing problems with jaw growth and emerging teeth may be detected early and if treated may prevent or intercept more serious problems from developing. This may make treatment at a later age shorter and less complicated.
Completed orthodontic treatment does not guarantee straight teeth for the rest of your life. Retainers are required to keep your teeth in their new positions. You must wear your retainers as instructed or teeth will shift. Later in life, most people will see teeth shift, usually the lower front teeth most often due to tooth clenching/grinding.
Excellent oral hygiene is mandatory during orthodontic treatment as are regular visits to your dentist. Inadequate or improper oral hygiene could result in cavities, discolored teeth, periodontal disease and decalcification. This may also be aggravated by excessive consumption of sweetened beverages or foods.
Due to the wide variation in the size and shape of teeth, complete closure of space may not be possible. Esthetic bonding by the dentist is a procedure allowing total space closure.
In some cases, a series of aligners can be used to correct orthodontic problems. These aligners are worn full time except for eating and brushing the teeth.
Teeth may become impacted (trapped in the bone) or just fail to erupt. These conditions may occur for no apparent reason.
Congenitally missing or lost teeth often require replacement with dental implants. Orthodontic treatment may be necessary to restore/create the space in order for the implant to assume the correct size.
